Going to the workplace every day is all but fading into obsolescence for certain positions. The lockdown and movement restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic only galvanized more companies in the direction of remote work arrangements. This offered a convenient opportunity for many employees to work from the comfort of their homes. According to a study by CoSo Cloud, 77% of remote workers attested to being more productive when working from home.

Millions of employees around the globe managed to be effective at their jobs from their homes while maintaining at least the same level of productivity as they did in traditional workplaces. It’s arguably the culmination of years of steadily increasing, voluntary departures from those same traditional workplaces, yet the culture of commuting to centralized workplaces has proven challenging to drop for many employers based on surveys conducted in disparate cities. The divisive question for employers has been: can everyone work from home?

Remote Work Doesn’t Work for All Roles

Unfortunately, not all employees have the technical understanding or role that can be optimized for a remote work arrangement. Therefore it became evident that a balance would have to be struck to make this process a mutual benefitting method for both employers and employees. This spawned the hybrid workplace culture, the blend of remote and onsite labor. A new book featured by The Washington Post — Suddenly Hybrid: Managing the Modern Meeting — inherently exemplifies the new focus for employers given the traction it has garnered on hybrid workplace logistics and etiquette.

“The verdict is in on the future of work, and for large sectors of the economy, the future is hybrid,” according to co-authors Dr. Joseph Allen and Karin Reed. “To their credit, many business owners have listened and have adopted a hybrid work philosophy. However, hybrid in name is very different from hybrid work in action, and employees will notice.”

Think of hybrid as a catch-all term referring to several workplace modi operandi. It could refer to a situation in which workers only have to show up to their workplace for a handful of days a week, for example. Another example, however, would refer to an arrangement wherein some personnel work in-house full-time while others work remotely full-time.

To fully imbibe the former method whereby staff works remotely part-time and onsite on other days, proper preparations are necessary to account for the challenges that the process involves. This includes quality tech to support employees — possibly provided for them by the employer — with proper connections to the workplace in the event of a virtual meeting, for example. Many roles require a lot more gear to be delivered to their homes even to perform their job duties, which often call for proprietary software on the provided hardware.

Insightful Tips to Retrofit Workplace for Hybrid-Remote Culture

A Barco survey recently found that a third of job seekers are strictly opting only to accept positions with employers who are well equipped for hybrid or remote arrangements, specifically with reliable video conferencing gear. It also determined that candidates in the job pool hope to see at least two days available for remote Work per week on average, and 56% of surveyed employees prefer to host video calls from laptops than from any other device, which bears significance since laptops are typically take-home work devices or personal property for everyone else.

The survey also shows that workers expect hybrid meeting capability to proliferate over the next 12 months. The idea that job seekers have that expectation is a critical consideration for employers searching for ideal candidates because it suggests that more potential hires might fall through if organizations stand firmly opposed to remote or hybrid work arrangements. Those candidates might be more inclined to seek work elsewhere since they expect that their demands are likely to be met by one of their other prospects.

Working remotely can be a nightmare when the employee lacks the savvy for its technical hurdles, which can interrupt their Work and lead to lots of lost time. This is where organizations can come in with a tailored structure to ensure that employees are fully equipped for their assigned tasks and any meetings that are required.
